Lossy Compression

You have been experimenting with how images and files are compressed on a computer and how in turn those files are encoded by the computer.

  • With a partner, go to the Lossy Text Compression App. (Unit 2: Lesson 5)
  • Answer the following questions:
    • What is happening in the app?
    • Should this “count” as text compression?  Why or why not?
    • What do you think “lossy” refers to?

  1. The app is compressing the text by keeping all the first letters of each word but taking out all of the vowels in between each word. Yes this should be considered as compression because it kind of makes it easier to read the text (KINDA!!!)...I think lossy refers to the lost of letters in each word

  2. This app is compressing the text by shorting some of the word but also still letting the reader understand what the message is. This could be considered as a compression because it is broken down to save more space. I think lossy refers to loosing some letters in the text.

  3. What is happening in the app is that there is a compression going on. This shouldn't count as a text compression because some of the words to replace to make the text smaller were difficult to do. What I think "lossy" is to make a text smaller.

  4. 1.it keep the first letter of every word and then remove all the vowels that the text is still readable by a person.
2.its compressed because its abbreviated n making it smaller
    3. lossy refers to loss of letters in each word. These techniques are used to reduce data size for storage

  5. The app is removing all the vowels in every word but keeping the first letter. Yes, because it makes the words smaller. Lossy refers to reducing data for all storage.

  6. This application as a writing, is storing all the first and last letters of each word but extracting each vowel, this is considered an understanding algorithm, this is to represent a certain amount of information using a smaller amount of it, being Impossible an exact reconstruction of the original data.

  8. This app is compression the text by decreasing the amount of words required, but allowing the reader to understand the message. This can be considered as an compression because it is fragmented to save space. I think lossy refers to taking out letters you don't really need.

  9. this app is removing all vowels from each word. yes because it is abbreviating the words. the lost of words and it reduces the data size for all storage

  10. The app is compression the data size by removing vowels from each word applicable to.
This can be considered compression since it is shown that the initial message's size is being reduced by 22.2%.
I believe lossy refers to the loss of data within a file, text, etc. This loss of data is shown through the compression percentage.

  11. the app is basically removing the vowels from each word. and yes it does because its abbreviating the words. Also the loss of the words and it reduces the data size for all storage.

  12. The app is compressing all words to a four letter maximum.
It should count as text compression because the selection of removed letters allows for the word to still be deciphered by the reader.
Lossy in this case is referring to the lessening of characters used to form simple words.

  13. What is happening in the app?

The app is making the message take up less space by compressing and making the words smaller.

Should this “count” as text compression? Why or why not?

It should count as compression because it is making the message take up less space in a way where you can still comprehend what it is saying.

What do you think “lossy” refers to?

I think is refers to losing data.

  14. The first letter of the word is kept and the vowels are removed to still have a readable and compressed message. This should count as text compression because less letters are used which means simplification. lossey refers to keeping the information but in regards to leaving some irrelevant bits out...

  15. The app is removing the vowels from each word, its a form of compression because it is reducing the size of the message, i think lossy refers reducing data and deleting unessecary or unoticeable pieces.

  16. the app removed all vowels well most of them even though vowels were removed it was still read able , it basically abbreviated

  17. The words are shortened and the vowels are being removed. It is considered text compression in that they are shortening it's data size.

  18. In the app it is compressing the text to make it shorter and easier to manage. It is only a 4 letter maximum
This should be considered as text compression because it broke down the original text to make it more readable.
Lossy refers to information that is unnecessary and it is thrown out to reduce the size.

  21. The app is compressing the text by removing the vowels from each word. Yea this should be count as text compression because it helps to reduce data size. Lossy is refers to reducing words that they think you don't need so storage can be saved

  22. in the app all the vowels are being removed in order to abbreviate the word, to take away data to allow storage and along the way when the receiver opens the file they will see the lost data.

  23. They kinda of are compressing the letter by keeping the first letter of the word while removing all or some vowels in the letter making it still somewhat readable. I think this does count as an compression because the text are compressed from the original text. I think lossy means that you can compress the text but the the other person receives the text as the original.

  24. The App Is Compressing The Text.
This Shouldn't Count As A Text Compression Because Even Though Its Making The Text Smaller But Some People May Not Understand It.
Lossy Refers To It Removes Information That Isn't Needed So You Can Have More Space.

  25. The app is compressing the message by taking out the vowels from the words and it thinks that it is still readable by someone. This should be considered text compression because it is taking out information that is useless in order to make the message shorter. Lossy means to lose data and useless information.
